Trouble with driver update

When I try to configure the driver installation, I get the message that the kernel sources are needed, but the instructions say I don't need to re-build the kernel. What gives?

I'm trying to upgrade my Alsa version (Ubuntu) in order to get access to my internal microphone. I have an HP mini 110 running Ubuntu 8.04, Alsa 1.0.16

Please help.

Update: I followed the ALSA instructions (http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hda-intel) and that completed with no errors. However, I still seem to be running 1.0.16:

cat /proc/asound/version

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.16. Compiled on May 3 2009 for kernel 2.6.24-22-lpia (SMP).

Can anyone suggest how to get 1.0.21 working?
